From small beginnings, God is growing a “community shaped by Jesus.” - By Judith Jackson

Midweek Communion (every Tuesday in church) began as a quiet, said Communion service for those members of St Paul’s who found it difficult to attend the 9.30am sung Holy Communion service on Sundays, or who felt the need for a more meditative style of worship. At first, there were only the Vicar and two or three people, but it was greatly appreciated by those who came. Tea, coffee, and biscuits were served so folk could chat together afterwards.

Gradually, more people joined, and once a month we gathered at Caring for Life to share lunch together. It became clear that the time spent sharing life after the service was deeply appreciated and increasingly valuable.

Val and I thought about how we could continue this without the restriction of booking lunch—and therefore limiting who came. We felt called to offer a simple meal each week. The idea was that anyone who turned up could join in, and the regularity of it meant it soon became a fixture in people’s weekly commitments.

Since we started, about three years ago, the gathering has expanded to include St Paul’s members as well as folk from other churches who enjoy midweek fellowship. (And the team who prepare lunch has expanded too!)

We still go to Caring for Life about once a term, including for Christmas lunch. It is a joy and privilege to serve this precious group of older people who have, in their turn, served in church themselves. The sense of friendship, companionship, and care for one another is tangible as friends gather each week to share life and discipleship.

We serve soup, bread, various cakes, and fruit, with the cost on a “pay as you feel” basis. The staff join us when they can, which is always greatly appreciated.

Other events include a summer garden party, a Christmas party with entertainment, and an alternative Passover meal. Often, members of the young people’s group help at these events.

We would love to have younger members of St Paul’s join us if they are able. It’s good to share across the generations—and everyone is very welcome.
