School uniforms are one of those essentials every family needs — but they can also become one of the biggest household expenses, especially as children grow so quickly. That’s why the LS16 Community Uniform Exchange has become such an important resource for local families.

The exchange provides free, good-quality pre-loved school uniform to families across Ireland Wood, Tinshill, Cookridge, Lawnswood, West Park, Adel, Bramhope and beyond, helping reduce costs while also cutting down on waste. From jumpers and trousers to PE kits and school dresses, donated items are given a second life instead of ending up in landfill.

The impact of the project is already remarkable. At the April 2026 pop-up shop alone, the LS16 Community Uniform Exchange gave away 348 items of uniform to 74 local families. By redistributing these items rather than buying new, the initiative helped save an estimated:

  • 70kg of textile waste

  • 1,253kg of CO₂ emissions

  • 8,770 litres of water

  • £5,916 in uniform costs for families

These figures show how a simple community idea can make a real difference — not only financially, but environmentally too.

What makes the project special is the sense of community behind it. Parents help parents. Local volunteers work hard to collect donations, sort uniform, organise pop-up events, and connect families with the items they need. The project has also been supported by several dedicated volunteers and local councillors who continue to champion the initiative and help it grow across the LS16 area.

The LS16 Community Uniform Exchange is also proud to work alongside Wear & Share Leeds. Whenever surplus generic uniform is donated, it is passed on to Wear & Share Leeds so it can be redistributed to families across Leeds through their own community events. This partnership helps ensure that good-quality uniform reaches as many families as possible and prevents perfectly usable clothing from going to waste.

The environmental benefits are particularly important. The fashion and textile industry is one of the world’s biggest contributors to waste and carbon emissions. Reusing school uniform keeps perfectly wearable clothing in circulation for longer, reducing demand for new production and helping families make more sustainable choices.

For many parents, the exchange also removes the pressure of buying expensive replacement items throughout the school year. Children grow quickly, uniforms get lost, and costs add up fast. Having access to free, quality uniform can make a huge difference for families balancing tight household budgets.

The LS16 Community Uniform Exchange regularly runs pop-up uniform events where families can browse available items, donate outgrown uniforms, and connect with others in the community. Every donated blazer, cardigan, or PE top helps another child start school feeling confident, included, and ready to learn.

If you have uniform your children no longer need, consider donating it. And if you’re looking for support with school uniform costs, the LS16 Community Uniform Exchange is here to help.

Together, we can support local families, strengthen our community, and reduce waste — one uniform at a time.
