On the 7th May, a group of 24 people, including regular midweek communion attendees and friends, went on a day trip to Newby Hall in Ripon. Claire, the church community worker, and myself went along as the “responsible” adults. It did feel like I was organising a school trip, having to collect “permission slips” (contact detail forms) from everyone and reminding them to bring a packed lunch and some pocket money for the gift shop!
On the day, everyone arrived on time for our 09.30 start. However, as the coach was about to leave, the door decided not to close, meaning we could no longer go on that coach. Although we had to wait 30 minutes for a new coach to arrive, our spirits stayed high and everyone was excited to get going.
Newby Hall is a large stately home that was built in 1695. We had an opportunity to go round the house on a guided tour. Due to the size of our group, we had to go round in two tours. Therefore, I divided us into two groups: the Paddington group and the Winnie the Pooh group.
The house was fascinating and full of unique and specially made items. One room that was particularly interesting was the tapestry room, which had three large tapestries hanging on the walls, as well as matching furniture. I was interested in all the hidden doors and passages throughout the house, but unfortunately we were not allowed to explore them.

There were many other things to explore at Newby Hall. Many members of the trip enjoyed the dollhouse exhibition. Many dollhouses, both antique and modern, full of miniature models, were on display. Another building, known as the “Bear House”, contained the teddy bear collection of Giles Brandreth. There was an original Paddington Bear teddy, Super Ted and many more. However, I was particularly excited to see my comedy hero on display: Fozzie Bear. For those who aren’t aware of who Fozzie is, he is the comedian bear from "The Muppet Show" TV series and films. I will admit that knowing Fozzie Bear was at Newby Hall was one of the reasons why I organised the trip!
Some of the group went to explore the gardens, whilst others ventured to the play area. There were also visits to the café for cups of tea and slices of cake. Most of the group were well behaved on the day, with one person almost missing the coach. However, I will neither confirm nor deny that the flowers run over by a mobility scooter were done by someone from our group.
Overall, it was a lovely day out and enjoyed by all. We hope to run more day trips in the future, so look out for any information that may come!
