Selah Women's Ministry - By Emma Chadwick

Selah is our women’s ministry here at St Paul’s. Selah is a word used in Psalms, often used to initiate a moment for pause, stillness and reflection. This seemed appropriate for the name of women’s ministry as, stereotypically, we can often be incredibly busy, overscheduled, wearing too many hats, trying to be all things to all people. Selah was created for women of all ages and demographics to come together in our shared experience of womanhood, and most importantly women who are children of God. 

For the last 3 or so years we have held various events, from afternoon tea and testimony, pottery painting, wreath making at Christmas, a pudding tasting trip and a good ol’ bevvy at the pub! What has been particularly wonderful about these events is the way conversation has flowed between women of varying stages of life and experiences.

When setting up this group, I was keen for it to be God centred, for us to hear and learn from God for ourselves, but also for each other, for relationships to deepen as iron sharpens iron. However, what I have increasingly become aware of is the verse in Matthew 18 that says “where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am with them.” Yes, my agenda was important, valuable and is biblical, but when we do things in our own strength and force it, it can weather and fall. Yet, God is faithful. And as we women continue to invest in each other, our community and the Lord, He promises to be with us, to guide and lead our conversation to deeper connection with each other and ultimately, Him. 

Our next event will be on 10th October, where we have invited a guest speaker, Em Tyler, to come and speak to us and share a message from Jesus. I have asked Emily to speak on whatever Jesus tells her to speak on. And so I invite you to come, to pause, be still, reflect and hear how God wants to draw close to you.
