We're excited to share an update from the field, where our colleague Simon and the team have been conducting vital eye health work in northern Ethiopia.

Last week, the team was deployed to a remote region near the Eritrean border, reaching some of the most underprivileged communities in the area. This part of the country is home to the Erob people, an ethnic group distinct from the Tigrayans, who speak the Saho language. Their location and limited access to healthcare services make this kind of outreach essential—and deeply impactful.

The journey to reach these communities was no small feat. Each screening site required travel of anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours through rugged terrain. On Friday and again today, the team also held screenings at one of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Adigrat, where many have sought refuge during recent conflicts.

In total, 920 people were screened for eye conditions. Of those, 78 individuals were diagnosed with cataracts—slightly fewer than anticipated. However, the need remains significant. An encouraging 573 people received treatment for various eye problems, and 380 pairs of glasses were distributed, restoring clarity and quality of life to many who had been struggling in silence.

As we look ahead to next week, we face a new challenge: ensuring that those diagnosed with cataracts—especially from remote regions—can travel to Adigrat for surgery. The logistical hurdles are considerable, and we would deeply appreciate your prayers and support as we plan this next phase.

Thank you again for standing with us. Your ongoing generosity, and that of your church, makes this life-changing work possible and we give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed.
